G4-EN29In the 2016/2017 harvest, we received 20 non-monetary sanctions and 27 monetary assessments. Only a fine was considered significant1 given the size of the operation and the inherent risks. Most of the fines are related to contaminated areas, licensing, industrial effluents and fire incidents in sugarcane fields. There were no proceedings filed through arbitration mechanisms. In Brazil, the arbitration model is not yet adopted as a means of non-contentious resolution of environmental conflicts.

1A significant fine is defined as a fine whose value is equal to or greater than BRL 500,000.00

MATERIAL ASPECT: TRANSPORT
G4-DMAInformation provided in Establishing partnerships: Carriers
G4-EN30The main impacts resulting from transportation of products are related to possible spills and emissions of greenhouse gases. Regarding emissions, we annually quantify GHG emissions related to activities. Emissions from product transportation and distribution in 2016 totaled 170,999.57 tCO2eq. With a focus on optimizing operations and reducing costs and environmental impacts, we maintained investments in the integration and diversification of logistics modes. The idea is to always prioritize and develop modes other than road transportation, thereby reducing each year the participation of this mode in our matrix due to its higher cost and GHG emissions. Regarding spills, in the 2016/2017 harvest, there were six events of fuel spills in non-contained areas, which can generate fires or contamination of soil. We inspected 109 approved carriers for possible environmental impacts based on the risk matrix of the Integrated System for Management of Operations (Sistema Integrado para Gestão das Operações - SIGO), which is aligned with the Highway Transports Manual. Regarding transportation of employees, the main impacts are related to greenhouse gas emissions. In 2016 we included in Scope 3 the emissions from transportation of employees of our agro-industrial operations - which totaled 13,378.61 tCO2eq.

In order to manage this aspect, the various legal areas assess the nonconformities and fines received to identify causes and respective actions. Regarding tax matters, the contingency related to significant fines, official notifications or sanctions drawn up by public agencies, object of administrative or legal proceedings, for alleged non-compliance with tax laws and regulations in the harvest period, are duly reported in the Financial Statements, available here.

G4-PR6Sugar, when consumed in excess, can pose health risks and, therefore, has been pointed out by some players in society as harmful to healthy living. Aiming to raise awareness of the population about consumption of this ingredient, the Sugarcane Industry Union (UNICA), which has our support and partnership, launched the Sweet Balance campaign.
